It started with a weekend text message exchange between Emerald Ridge teachers Mr. Jamieson and Mr. Hill and finished with the former dazzling students by reciting pi to the 213th digit.
Jamieson, a first-year English teacher, reached out to Mr. Hill, the video production teacher, to ask how many digits of pi he’d need to learn to beat the students in a Pi Day reciting contest. Jamieson had already learned pi to 68 digits. Even though Hill assumed this was enough to win, he threw out a number he figured would keep Jamieson busy all week.
“I wouldn’t call it a prank,” Hill said. “I’d call it inspiring greatness. That’s what we do around here.”
The video class celebrated Pi Day by making short videos including one showcasing Jamieson’s new skill. Watch his reaction:
