Riding their momentum from Thursday, the distance runners stole the show again with a collection of awesome performances on Saturday. The performance of the day came from senior Ben Sauer, who is absolutely on fire this season. Sauer ran a lifetime best by nearly ten seconds to finish in third place in the 800; his time of 1:56.40 is the fourth fastest time in school history and the fourth fastest time in 4A this season. Sauer was joined in that event by Alex Miramontes, who also ran a lifetime best of 1:59.48 to break the 2:00 barrier for the first time. In the 1600, Logan Johnson shattered his personal best, breaking five minutes for the first time on his way to running 4:40.39. Another barrier broken on the men’s side came in the 3200, where Kevin Alfaro broke 10 minutes to finish in third place in 9:58.46, earning a league meet auto-qualifying time. For the women, Maren Nealon just missed her personal best in the 800 that she had set on Thursday and finished in fourth. Also in fourth was teammate Abigail Smith, who ran 5:37 in the 1600, and Isabelle Cochran in the 3200 at 12:00 even. Heather Fleetwood earned a lifetime best in the 3200, running 14:26.
Our throwers continue to be a force in the field events. Emma Morrison won the shot put by nearly 2’ and came back to throw a lifetime best of 109’5” in the discus for fourth place. Porter Fairchild had a solid throw at 45’2.5 for sixth place and JJ Nguyen threw a lifetime best of 130’9 to finish in fifth. Senior Gio Kafentzis equaled a first place jump in the long jump with a mark of 20’11 but settled for second on tie-breakers. Korbyn Hansen and Bernice Biembongo leapt to season bests of 15’4.5 and 15’4 respectively.
In the sprints, the Jags captured wins in both the men’s and women’s 200, in addition to the 400. Ka’Jon Babcock defeated a formidable sprinter from Eastlake to capture the 200, while Iren Derricks cruised to a comfortable win in the women’s 200. Mikayla Gardley and Meggie Kilcup went 1-2 in the 400, with a season best for Kilcup at 61.58, while Gardley’s time kept her in the #2 spot in 4A. Alver Abuda and Shaan Lal grabbed lifetime bests in the hurdles, despite the windy and rainy conditions!
